Understanding Malaysia’s Public Transport: LRT, MRT, BRT & More

Understanding Malaysia’s Public Transport: LRT, MRT, BRT & More

Here's a brief explanation of  Malaysia's public transport system, especially in and around Kuala Lumpur:

  1. LRT (Light Rail Transit)
A fast train service operating on elevated and underground tracks. It’s designed for medium-capacity public transit and connects key areas in the Klang Valley.

  2. MRT (Mass Rapid Transit)
A larger, high-capacity rail system, similar to LRT but with longer routes and bigger trains. MRT lines cover more suburban and outlying areas of Kuala Lumpur and Selangor.

  3. Monorail
A type of train that runs on a single rail, usually elevated. In Kuala Lumpur, the Monorail serves city-center locations, popular with tourists and daily commuters.

  4. BRT (Bus Rapid Transit)
A bus public transport system with its own dedicated lanes, similar to a train system in Malaysia.

  5. RapidKL Buses
These are public buses operated by RapidKL, Malaysia’s main urban public transportation operator. They serve routes around Kuala Lumpur and the Klang Valley.

  6. MRT Buses
Buses operated under the MRT system. They connect neighborhoods and housing areas to the nearest MRT stations, making the train system more accessible.
