On-Campus Student Accommodation in Malaysia

Universities typically offer two types of student accommodation in Malaysia: single rooms or sharing rooms.

Shared rooms can accommodate up to 4 students in one unit. Each student gets their own bed, study table and closet, while sharing common facilities like washrooms or kitchen.

On the other hand, single rooms are usually smaller in size to accommodate only 1 student. In a single room the student gets their own study table, chair, bed, closet, and sometimes a sofa.

In university accommodation buildings, the washroom and kitchen are shared between a number of rooms and are cleaned/maintained regularly by the hostel management.

Pros for Living On-Campus Student Accommodation

  • Classes and schools will be nearby and just within walking distance.
  • You will have a sense of community as you will be surrounded by other students.
  • Maintenance and security issues will usually be handled by the on-campus accommodation management.

Premium On-Campus Student Accommodation Accommodation in Malaysia

Some universities offer premium student accommodation in Malaysia for those  who are willing to pay an extra budget for a more exclusive experience.

Take a look at Universiti Sains Malaysia’s premium student accommodation facility:

These premium accommodations usually are studios or single rooms, and the monthly rental ranges from RM550 - 850 depending on the size. The accommodation is considered premium as the furniture would be new, and more facilities would be provided such as TV, private kitchen, and more.

What to Expect from On-Campus Student Accommodation

  • Only light cooking is allowed within the accommodation facilities. Alternative to cooking, students usually buy their meals at the budget cafes that the university offers.
  • Cleaning your personal space is your own responsibility, while the cleaning of shared spaces is done by the accommodation management.
  • Taking care of your personal belongings (i.e., clothes, electric devices) is your responsibility.
  • Keep an eye out for important announcements by the accommodation management. These announcements typically are regarding fire alarm drills, pest control, or entertainment events.

Applying for On-Campus Student Accommodation

You will be eligible to apply for on-campus accommodation once you receive your admission offer letter.

The accommodation department in your university will have its website and application process, so it is important to look for the application process and complete it on time before your arrival.

Off-Campus Student Accommodation in Malaysia

Hunting for apartments off-campus can be explored via reliable websites such as iBilik  or PropertyGuru. These websites gives students the option to rent an individual room or a whole apartment.

Tip of the day:

When trying to find off-campus accommodation near your university, search for [accommodation for students near ‘university name’] and you will be able to view options offered for students.

Pros for Living Off-Campus

  • Living off-campus will allow for more independence and freedom as there usually are less rules and regulations.
  • More personalized housing as you can furnish and  decorate your room however you like.
  • You will gain life skills by managing your own place in terms of cleanliness, maintenance and security.

Premium Off-Campus Student Accommodation in Malaysia

Some residential condominiums offer luxury suites or rooms for students to rent at a slightly higher budget. Take this luxury condominium, M Vertica,  as an example, where different types of premium rooms in Kuala Lumpur are offered ranging from RM900 - 1300 monthly.

What to Expect from Off-Campus Student Accommodation

  • Be sure to check that the rental website/agent you are working with is a licensed and officially registered source.
  • Expect to be asked for a rental deposit + security deposit before moving in to your rental.
  • Keep in mind the house rules that every landlord/rental management might have and follow them respectfully.
