The Bachelor of Dietetics (Honours) program at International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) is centered around nutritional science, focusing on its application for disease treatment and health promotion for individuals and groups. This interdisciplinary and applied field emphasizes providing individuals with the essential nutrients from their food.
Dietetics integrates a wide range of natural and social sciences, equipping practitioners to educate and empower individuals and communities to improve their dietary intake for better health outcomes. The program addresses nutrition both in health and disease, extending from primary care to tertiary care for specific acute medical conditions.
Essentially, dietetics involves manipulating diet to enhance health, requiring reflective practice, systematic clinical reasoning, and a problem-solving approach. Students learn to consider individual circumstances, including age, gender, socio-economic status, disease state, food habits, and lifestyle, to accurately assess nutritional status and develop tailored dietary advice. Through this comprehensive curriculum, graduates from IIUM are prepared to make significant contributions to the field of dietetics and promote healthier communities.
