The Bachelor of Optometry (Honours) program at International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) prepares students to become primary healthcare specialists trained to examine the eyes for visual defects, ocular diseases, and general health-related issues. Optometrists are skilled in fitting and supplying optical appliances, including spectacles, contact lenses, and low vision aids.
The program focuses on the detection, diagnosis, and management of ocular diseases, as well as the rehabilitation of visual system conditions. Optometrists provide primary eye care and are responsible for making ocular and ophthalmic referrals to secondary care services.
Students in this program learn to examine the visual system to assess its state of health and, when necessary, provide optical corrections to optimize visual performance. Through a combination of theoretical knowledge and practical experience, graduates from IIUM are equipped to make significant contributions to eye care and enhance the visual health of individuals and communities.
