The Doctor of Philosophy in Laws (By Research) at International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) is the highest form of postgraduate legal study and is exclusively thesis‑based. Candidates are required to prepare a viable research proposal in accordance with the Faculty’s prescribed guidelines and to undertake supervised, original research culminating in a written thesis and a viva voce examination.
The Kulliyyah is committed to research excellence and recognises the diversity of high‑quality legal scholarship, supporting a wide range of methodologies across doctrinal, comparative and interdisciplinary projects. Each doctoral candidate is assigned one or more supervisors with the appropriate academic standing and methodological expertise to guide the research. Supervision covers most areas of law as well as interdisciplinary topics with legal dimensions.
Throughout the programme students build a close, productive relationship with their supervisors, who provide continuous guidance and support. Where appropriate and subject to availability of qualified supervisors and examiners, candidates may submit theses in Arabic. The degree is awarded upon successful completion and assessment of the thesis and viva.
