The Master of Medicine in Anaesthesiology (Clinical Specialist Training) at the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) is a competency‑based programme that trains physicians to become safe, skilled and ethical consultant anaesthesiologists. Through supervised clinical attachments and hands‑on procedural training, candidates acquire core expertise in anaesthesia administration and peri‑operative care, supported by a strong grounding in physiology and pharmacology.
The programme prepares trainees to manage acute and critical situations, perform consultant‑level duties in Malaysian hospitals, and lead peri‑operative services including operating theatres and intensive care units. Emphasis is placed on professional conduct, compassionate practice and recognising personal limitations.
Trainees develop effective communication and teamwork skills, the ability to critically appraise evidence and pursue self‑directed learning, and leadership qualities for service coordination. Research literacy, medical audit, computing skills for literature search and data handling, and basic health service management are included. Graduates are equipped to provide high‑quality anaesthetic care, engage in education and research, and contribute to service development.
