The Master of Medicine in Family Medicine (Clinical Specialist Training) at International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) is a structured, competency‑based programme delivered in three phases and currently conducted as an open system. Phase I (year 1) is a one‑year foundational attachment covering three major postings: Medicine, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, and Paediatrics, conducted at accredited Ministry of Health hospitals. At the end of Phase I, candidates sit the Part I professional examination and must pass the theory paper before proceeding to the clinical component; successful completion of all Part I papers is required to progress to Phase II.
Phase II spans two years. In the second year, trainees complete 11 compulsory minor clinical postings, one elective posting, and a research methods course, with placements at MOH‑accredited hospitals. The third year focuses on family medicine training through rotations at public health clinics and the university primary care centre. Candidates must pass the Part II professional examination at the end of Phase II to advance to the final year.
Phase III (year 4) continues family medicine training at public health clinics. Prior to the final professional examination, candidates are required to submit and successfully defend a thesis dissertation, a family case report, and a clinical practice diary. Passing the Professional Exam III is mandatory to be awarded the Master of Medicine (Family Medicine). This programme prepares clinicians for independent specialist practice in primary care by integrating clinical competence, research skills and professional development.
