The Master of Surgery in General Surgery (Clinical Specialist Training) at International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) is a structured, competency-based programme that prepares surgeons for independent specialist practice. Designed to develop clinical knowledge, technical skills and professional judgment, the programme combines problem-centred learning with supervised, hands-on clinical experience across a range of general surgical disciplines.
Training spans a minimum of four years, with a maximum allowable duration of seven years. Trainees rotate through accredited clinical posts where they perform duties under appropriate supervision; as they progress, they assume increasing responsibility for patient care with a corresponding reduction in direct oversight. Trainees are required to maintain logbooks, submit clinical case reports, and participate in continuous formative and summative assessments throughout the programme.
Research is an integral component: candidates must conduct a supervised research project and produce a dissertation prior to the final examination. On successful completion of all training components and assessments, graduates will be equipped to function independently as first-day specialists in general surgery, meeting the professional standards expected by regulatory and healthcare authorities.
