The core of a PhD is research, which involves extending knowledge through exploration, investigation, and contemplation. In scientific and engineering disciplines, research often includes experimentation, but it encompasses more than just experiments; it requires interpretation and deep understanding. To earn a PhD, you must develop new abstractions, approaches, algorithms, principles, or mechanisms, and your work should meet high-quality standards comparable to that of peers in your field.

To complete a PhD, you will present your research findings in a formal document known as a thesis or dissertation, which must contain a significant original contribution to knowledge or understanding. You will also need to defend your work in an oral examination called a viva voce. A full-time PhD program is typically completed in three years.

Entry Requirements  

• A master’s degree (or international equivalent) with an average mark of 60% and above plus, an upper second class honours degree (or international equivalent) in a relevant discipline. Non-UK qualifications will be assessed against this standard.
