Over the past two decades, psychology has emerged as one of the most popular degree fields worldwide. It is a captivating subject that helps us understand the workings of our minds, brains, relationships, and societies. At UNM, we provide high-quality doctoral training for postgraduate students interested in pursuing an MPhil or PhD. As a research student, you will collaborate with two members of our academic staff and join one of our seven research groups.
Given the diverse nature of research within the school, there are numerous opportunities for MPhil and PhD projects. Postgraduate training at the School of Psychology is designed to equip you with essential research skills, as well as communication, information technology, personal development, and employment-related skills. This training can be customized to suit your individual needs.

Psychology postgraduates can advance to careers in research and higher education in both the public and private sectors. Research psychologists working for businesses may engage in diverse projects, such as developing innovative strategies for targeting advertising campaigns, creating new forms of 3D cinema, or evaluating new drugs for treating depression.
Due to the diverse nature of research within the school, there are many different possibilities for MPhil and PhD projects. Progression through both programmes involves satisfactory completion of annual research activity reports as well as some optional taught courses. This rigorous training is designed to provide you with necessary research skills and equip you with communication, information technology, personal development and employment-related skills. This training can be tailored to meet your individual needs. You will also be expected to attend the school’s research seminars.
Research spans nine themes :
