The Bachelor of Science in Chemistry program at Universiti Malaya UM is housed within the largest department in the Faculty of Science, which has been operational since the academic year 1959/1960 This makes it one of the oldest departments in the faculty Notably, the Department of Chemistry was the first institution of higher learning in Malaysia to receive accreditation from the Royal Society of Chemistry UK in August 2012
One of the department's primary objectives is to provide a center of excellence in chemical education and research in Malaysia Students are trained to develop critical, creative, and innovative thinking skills, preparing them to excel in various aspects of chemistry The department takes pride in producing graduates who are highly regarded and sought after in the job market
Currently, the department comprises 54 academic staff members, including several from abroad and one Emeritus Professor In addition to teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, the faculty members conduct high-quality research in both fundamental and applied chemistry Although their research interests vary, they share a common philosophy focused on addressing chemical-related problems and developing expertise in the field
