The Bachelor of Arts (English) program at Universiti Malaya (UM) is designed to be comparable to similar programs offered at universities in the United Kingdom and the United States. The curriculum provides a comprehensive exploration of canonical English literature, spanning from the Medieval to the Modern periods. It also emphasizes literature in English from diverse regions, including Africa, India, Australia, and the USA.
The program includes courses reflective of current interdisciplinary developments in English Literature, such as:
Teaching methods primarily involve lectures and tutorials, focusing on interactive learning to challenge and enhance students' abilities. Assessment typically follows a 60:40 ratio, with 60% based on continuous coursework and 40% from final examinations, though some courses may be assessed entirely through coursework.
Students benefit from the e-learning platform SPeCTRUM, which supports all teaching activities and provides resources for registered students. Each student is assigned an Academic Advisor for guidance on academic and personal matters.
Additionally, there are opportunities for students to participate in exchange programs with overseas universities, providing valuable exposure to different learning environments. Credits earned during these exchanges can often be transferred, subject to specific terms and conditions.
To further enhance their employability, students are required to complete an internship with a company, institution, or organization, gaining practical experience and skills relevant to their future careers.
