The Bachelor of Chemical Engineering program at Universiti Malaya (UM) prepares students to become vital contributors to society by working collaboratively across various sectors. Chemical engineers play a crucial role in designing and constructing equipment for large-scale chemical and biochemical processes, ensuring these operations are safe and economically viable.
Students will learn to purify crude oil into essential fuels like petrol, kerosene, and diesel, as well as produce everyday materials such as plastics, fertilizers, drinking water, cooking oils, packaged foods, medicines, and vaccines. Chemical engineers are also involved in the mass production of components like chips for electronics.
In addition to traditional chemical processes, the program emphasizes the growing importance of biotechnology, where engineers work with living organisms to develop renewable products. Given the potential social and environmental impacts of large-scale chemical processing, the curriculum also focuses on sustainable practices, equipping students with the knowledge to design processes that protect both people and the planet. This comprehensive education prepares graduates to address contemporary challenges in the chemical engineering field and beyond.
