Doctor of Philosophy in Geographic Information System (GIS) By Research Mode at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) focuses on the advanced integration of hardware and software for capturing, managing, manipulating, analyzing, and displaying all forms of geographically referenced (spatial) data. This program emphasizes the utilization of GIS to uncover intricate relationships within spatial information.
Key areas of research include GIS concepts such as spatial data structures, data sources and transfer methods, projections and coordinate systems, georeferencing, metadata, supporting software, and global positioning systems. Students will engage in acquiring and compiling data from various sources, including maps, field surveys, aerial photographs, and satellite images, as well as integrating remote sensing with GIS.
The program also covers fundamental and advanced spatial analysis techniques, including overlay, extraction, and interpolation. Research opportunities are available in the integration of satellite technology and GIS for multidisciplinary applications, including disaster modeling, environmental management, marine and coastal studies, natural resource exploration, and urban development. Through rigorous research, students will be well-equipped to tackle complex challenges in the field of GIS and contribute valuable insights to various applications.
