Doctor of Philosophy in Wildlife and Exotic Animal Health By Research Mode at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) provides an advanced examination of the health issues affecting wildlife and exotic animals in the tropics. The program focuses on a variety of research areas, including disease agents and pathobiology, emerging diseases and zoonosis, epidemiology, conservation medicine, and the management and welfare of zoo animals.
PhD candidates will engage in diverse research initiatives involving a wide array of taxa, including free-ranging wild species, captive wildlife, and exotic pets. Research on free-ranging wildlife will investigate the human-wildlife and livestock-wildlife interfaces, emphasizing pathogen and vector diversity, disease transmission dynamics, ecological determinants, and the effects of habitat changes. Studies on zoonotic diseases among captive wildlife and exotic pets will focus on pathogen diversity and transmission risk factors. Additionally, the program will support veterinary conservation efforts in breeding, reproductive biology, nutrition, welfare, and the management of endangered species, preparing graduates to make impactful contributions to the field.
