Master of Geographic Information System (GIS) By Research Mode at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) focuses on the integration of hardware and software for capturing, managing, manipulating, analyzing, and displaying all forms of geographically referenced (spatial) data. This program emphasizes the utilization of GIS to uncover relationships within spatial information.
Key areas of study include GIS concepts such as spatial data structures, data sources and transfer methods, projections and coordinate systems, georeferencing, metadata, supporting software, and global positioning systems. Students will learn how to acquire and compile data from a variety of sources, including maps, field surveys, aerial photographs, and satellite images, while also exploring the integration of remote sensing with GIS.
The program covers both fundamental and advanced spatial analysis techniques, including overlay, extraction, and interpolation. Research opportunities extend to the integration of satellite technology and GIS for multidisciplinary applications in disaster modeling, environmental management, marine and coastal studies, natural resource exploration, and urban development. Through rigorous research, students will be equipped to address complex challenges using advanced GIS technologies.
