Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) ?

Doctor of Philosophy in Applied Parasitology (By Research) at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) is a research-based postgraduate programme that covers a wide spectrum of applied parasitology, integrating both medical and veterinary perspectives.

The programme offers opportunities for advanced research on parasitic diseases of public health importance, with particular emphasis on malaria, including studies on its epidemiology and vector bionomics. Field-based research may be conducted in malaria-prone regions of Malaysia, especially in the state of Perak and areas along the Malaysia–Thailand border.

In the area of veterinary parasitology, the programme primarily focuses on trichostrongylid nematode parasites of ruminants. Key research areas include the bionomics of these nematodes, evaluation of anthelmintic drug efficacy, and parasite control strategies in indigenous goat and sheep populations of northern Peninsular Malaysia. Innovative control approaches, such as the use of medicated urea molasses blocks (MUMB) for managing trichostrongylid nematode infections, also represent promising and impactful research topics for doctoral candidates.

Through comprehensive research training and field-based investigations, the programme aims to produce highly competent researchers capable of contributing to advances in parasitology, public health, and animal health management.
