Doctor of Philosophy in Biotechnology (By Research) at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) is a research-intensive programme designed to prepare highly skilled researchers in one of the fastest-growing fields within applied biological sciences. The programme focuses on the practical application of cells and their components in manufacturing and service industries through the integration of knowledge from microbiology, biochemistry, genetics, molecular biology, chemistry, and chemical and process engineering.
Doctoral candidates receive advanced theoretical and hands-on training in modern biotechnological techniques and applications, while developing a strong foundation in cellular biology, including microbiology, biochemistry, genetics, and molecular biology. Research activities are supported by state-of-the-art facilities, such as automated DNA sequencers, electron microscopes, protein crystallography equipment, and large-scale fermentation systems.
Current research areas include studies on gene structure and regulation, as well as investigations into plant and animal cell culture techniques conducted by experienced academic staff. Through rigorous research training and access to modern infrastructure, the programme aims to produce graduates capable of contributing to innovation, research, and technological advancement in biotechnology at both national and international levels.
