The Doctor of Philosophy in Energy Studies (By Research) at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) focuses on advanced research in renewable and sustainable energy technologies, with particular emphasis on solar energy and bioenergy. The programme covers research areas including solar photovoltaic systems, solar thermal technologies, bioenergy, fuel cells and batteries, and thermal processes.

Research in solar photovoltaic focuses on the fabrication and development of solar cells and modules, electrical power systems, and computer-based modelling and simulation. Solar thermal research includes the design and development of solar thermal systems, hot water systems, drying systems, air-conditioning applications, and thermal modelling. Bioenergy research explores the utilization of biomass and waste materials and the production of solid and liquid biofuels through fast and slow pyrolysis.

The programme provides opportunities for advanced research and development in energy technologies, contributing to the development of efficient, sustainable, and environmentally friendly energy solutions.
