Doctor of Philosophy in Environmental Biology (By Research) at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) is an advanced research-focused programme that responds to the growing global concern for environmental sustainability. Malaysia, with its exceptionally rich biodiversity within a relatively small geographical area, provides an ideal natural laboratory for environmental research. Effective preservation and conservation of this biodiversity require a strong scientific understanding and deep appreciation of environmental systems.
The programme trains students in both the fundamental and applied aspects of ecology and environmental biology, strengthening their knowledge of ecological concepts, ecosystem functions, and the complex interactions between biotic and abiotic components. Through rigorous research, students gain a comprehensive understanding of the structure, function, and diversity of tropical ecosystems, as well as the critical importance of environmental protection and sustainable management of natural resources.
Environmental Biology is closely linked to Aquatic Biology, and this interdisciplinary relationship is reflected in the programme’s research scope. Academic staff in the School of Biological Sciences actively conduct research in Environmental Biology and supervise postgraduate students working on environmentally and aquatically related research topics, fostering high-quality research with strong scientific and environmental impact.
