Doctor of Philosophy in Microbiology (By Research) at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) is a multidisciplinary, research-intensive programme that integrates classical microbiology with advanced molecular approaches, including DNA-based technologies. The programme supports both fundamental and applied research, producing highly versatile graduates equipped for impactful scientific careers.
Current research themes include the discovery and characterization of bioactive compounds from local plants with inhibitory effects against Helicobacter pylori (the causative agent of peptic ulcers); microbial production of flavour enhancers, dyes, and industrial enzymes; molecular characterization of nitrogen fixation (nif) genes in Gram-positive bacteria; isolation and identification of psychrophilic nitrogen-fixing microorganisms from Antarctica; and the development of microbial processes to convert oil palm biomass into biodegradable plastics such as polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA). The department also hosts a curated Fusarium collection as part of an international collaborative network, further strengthening its global research engagement.
