Doctor of Philosophy in Zoology (By Research) at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) provides advanced postgraduate training designed to prepare graduates for professional careers in conservation, resource management, biomedical sciences, academia, and related fields. The programme emphasizes original and impactful research in zoological sciences, development of a strong foundation in zoological literature, and professional training in the presentation and publication of scientific research.
Research opportunities span a wide range of zoological sub-disciplines, supported by collaborative and interdisciplinary programmes in oceanography, wildlife, and aquatic sciences. Key areas of study include wildlife ecology, water quality, habitat management, fisheries science, and conservation zoology. Postgraduate research in wildlife and aquatic biology focuses on ecological principles, field-based research techniques, and their application to the sustainable management of zoological resources.
Students benefit from modern research infrastructure, including molecular laboratories, specimen collections, and dedicated computing facilities, enabling in-depth and trans-disciplinary research. The zoology research group comprises experts with diverse methodological approaches and study organisms, with specializations in behavioural biology, population ecology, ecological genetics, phylogenetic systematics, and population genetics. While particular emphasis is placed on lower vertebrates (such as fish and amphibians) and invertebrates, including insects, postgraduate research also encompasses a broad diversity of animal taxa.
