Master of Science in Botany at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) is a postgraduate programme designed to train and develop competent plant scientists and academics with strong theoretical knowledge and practical research skills. The programme emphasizes both fundamental and advanced studies in plant science, preparing graduates for careers in research, academia, and related fields.
Research training is supported by modern and well-equipped facilities, including low-temperature rooms, plant tissue culture laboratories, gas-liquid chromatography (GLC) equipment, and a newly established herbarium that provides access to preserved plant specimens collected across Peninsular Malaysia. Additional advanced instrumentation such as electron microscopes, ultracentrifuges, electrophoresis systems, and computational tools for DNA and protein sequence analysis are also available through shared and specialized laboratories.
The programme offers strong research opportunities in plant cell and molecular biology, plant systematics, and plant evolution. It also encourages interdisciplinary collaboration with fields such as environmental biology, agronomy, plant pathology, and biotechnology. Current research includes conservation studies on threatened plant species in Malaysia, such as Cryptocoryne, in collaboration with environmental and ecological research programmes.
