Master of Science in Environmental Biology at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) is a postgraduate programme that focuses on the study of ecosystems, biodiversity, and environmental processes, with particular emphasis on tropical environments. The programme responds to the growing global need for environmental awareness, conservation, and sustainable management of natural resources.
Students are trained in both fundamental and applied aspects of ecology and environmental science, gaining a strong understanding of interactions between biotic and abiotic components across various ecosystems. The programme provides broad knowledge of tropical ecosystem structure, function, and biodiversity, alongside the principles of environmental protection and conservation.
Environmental Biology is closely linked with Aquatic Biology, and this interdisciplinary relationship is reflected in research and supervision within the School of Biological Sciences. Academic staff involved in Environmental Biology also actively supervise postgraduate research in aquatic-related topics, promoting collaborative and cross-disciplinary studies that address key environmental and ecological challenges.
