Master of Science in Microbiology at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) is a multidisciplinary postgraduate programme that integrates traditional microbiological disciplines with modern molecular approaches, including DNA-based technologies. The programme covers both fundamental and applied microbiology, providing students with a strong scientific foundation and versatile research skills applicable to diverse careers in science.
Current research areas include the identification and characterization of bioactive compounds and metabolites from local plants with inhibitory effects against Helicobacter pylori, the causative agent of peptic ulcers; microbial production of flavour enhancers, dyes, and industrial enzymes; and molecular characterization of nitrogen fixation (nif) genes in various Gram-positive bacteria. Additional studies involve the isolation of psychrophilic nitrogen-fixing microorganisms from Antarctica and the development of microbial processes for converting oil palm biomass into biodegradable plastics such as polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA).
The department also maintains a Fusarium collection as part of an international collaborative research initiative, supporting advanced studies in fungal biology and plant–microbe interactions.
