Master of Science in Zoology at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) is a postgraduate programme that provides advanced training for careers in conservation, wildlife and resource management, biomedical sciences, and academia. The programme emphasizes the development of independent research skills in zoological science, along with a strong foundation in scientific literature, data interpretation, and the communication and publication of research findings.
Students are exposed to a wide range of zoological sub-disciplines supported by interdisciplinary collaboration in oceanography, wildlife science, and aquatic biology. Areas of study include wildlife ecology, water quality, habitat management, fisheries science, and conservation zoology. Training in wildlife and aquatic research focuses on ecological principles, field-based methodologies, and their application in the sustainable management of zoological resources.
The programme is supported by modern research facilities, including molecular laboratories, specimen collections, and computing resources, enabling both specialized and transdisciplinary research. The research group includes experts in behavioural ecology, population ecology, ecological genetics, phylogenetic systematics, and population genetics, with a focus on a wide range of organisms, particularly fish, amphibians, and insects, while also accommodating broader zoological research interests.
