Xiamen University (XMU) began marine studies nearly 100 years ago and is widely recognized as the cradle of China’s marine research. Its Department of Oceanography was established in 1946 as the first of its kind in China.
The College of Ocean and Earth Sciences has grown into one of China’s leading marine research institutions, supported by a state key discipline in marine science. The college also includes an academician from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and experts under China’s “Thousand Talents Plan”.
XMU offers strong research and learning platforms, such as the State Key Laboratory of Marine Environmental Science and the National Experimental Centre for Education. Its advanced research vessel, the Tan Kah Kee (R/V TKK), is equipped with state-of-the-art instruments and has supported interdisciplinary oceanographic cruises in international waters since 2016.
