Xiamen University (XMU) began its marine studies nearly 100 years ago and is recognized as the cradle of marine studies in China. Its Department of Oceanography, established in 1946, is the first of its kind in the country. The College of Ocean and Earth Sciences has developed into one of China’s premier marine research institutions, featuring a state key discipline in Marine Science. Among the faculty are two academicians from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and a number of experts involved in the "Thousand Talents Plan," China’s program for attracting global experts.
The college also boasts excellent educational and research platforms, such as the State Key Laboratory of Marine Environmental Science and the National Experimental Center for Education. Additionally, it operates the multi-purpose research vessel Jia Geng (嘉庚号), equipped with state-of-the-art scientific instruments. This vessel enables students to engage in front-line work and conduct scientific research in oceanography since 2016.
With strong support from XMU, the China-ASEAN College of Marine Sciences (CAMS) was established as the first overseas college of marine sciences at Xiamen University Malaysia (XMUM), sponsored by the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs under the China-ASEAN Maritime Cooperation Fund. Our well-equipped facilities serve both teaching and research purposes in the marine and environmental science fields, providing students with opportunities to gain practical and research experience even at the undergraduate level. This experience prepares them for further study and future employment.
