The Mathematics and Applied Mathematics program at Xiamen University (XMU), offered by the School of Mathematical Sciences (SMS), was launched in 1922 as one of the university's inaugural programs. Notably, the esteemed mathematician Chen Jingrun studied in this program from 1949 until 1953. In the “2018 Best Universities for Mathematics” rankings published by US News and World Report, XMU ranked 81st globally and 10th among Chinese universities.
Since 2018, the mathematics discipline at XMU has consistently ranked among the top 0.5% globally in the Essential Science Indicators (ESI), with an upward trend in its ranking each year. The SMS currently has 88 full-time faculty members and 14 distinguished visiting professors, with 97% holding Ph.D. degrees. Between 2013 and 2018, the school received RMB 60 million in research grants from the National Natural Science Foundation, and its faculty published around 150 SCI journal articles annually.
Additionally, SMS publishes the Journal of Mathematical Study and collaborates with Global Science Press to co-publish the SCIE journal, East Asian Journal of Applied Mathematics. Through its international collaborations, the school welcomes over 100 mathematicians to XMU each year. In 2019, Xiamen University was designated as the National Tian Yuan Mathematics Center for the Southeast Region.
