  • If you have completed your education in English/international schools or if you have met English language requirements through other qualifications (eg. TOEFL or PTE).

Other Ways to Study in Malaysia Without IELTS

  • English Language Preparatory Courses:

Some universities in Malaysia offer preparatory English courses to equip you with the language skills you will need during your degree. 

These preparatory courses are beneficial if you do not meet the minimum IELTS requirements yet.

It is important to note that as a student, you will still need to sit for an IELTS exam after passing the English Preparatory Course.

MSU allows students to start their first year of studies without IELTS. 

However, students need to pass the IELTS exam before they finish their first year (before renewing their visa).

Is IELTS Important in Malaysian Universities?

Because Malaysia lists English as an official language, IELTS is considered important in Malaysia by the universities and by immigration. 

This is to ensure that the international students are capable of living in Malaysia to keep up with the multicultural environment.

Minimum IELTS requirements for different programs include:

Undergraduate Programs

  • General Requirement:

    • Overall Score: 4.0 to 6.5

Postgraduate Programs

  • General Requirement:

    • Overall Band Score: 5.0 to 7.0
